Appropriate Technology
Appropriate technology is technology that is most appropriate to the environment and culture it is intended to support. In practice, it is often something that might be described as using the simplest and most benign level of technology that can effectively achieve the intended purpose in a particular location.

Such technology, as asserted in the book Small is Beautiful by E. F. Schumacher, tends to promote values such as health, beauty and permanence, in that order.

Open Standards
Open Standards are publicly available and implementable standards that increase compatibility between various hardware and software components. Anyone with the necessary technical know-how and resources can build products based on open standards which will work seamlessly with other standards based applications, thereby eliminating conflict.

Open standards which can be implemented by anyone, without royalties or other restrictions, are sometimes referred to as open formats.

Open Source Software
Open source software refers to computer software available with its source code and under an open source license. Such a license permits anyone to study, change, and improve the software, and to distribute the unmodified or modified software. It is the most prominent example of open source development.
